About the Community
San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood — now officially designated as SoMa Pilipinas, the Philippine Cultural Heritage District — represents a historic victory for Filipino-American community advocates who fought to preserve and celebrate the neighborhood's deep Filipino roots. The Bay Area Filipino community is one of the oldest and most politically active in the country, with a tradition of labor organizing, civic engagement, and cultural preservation that stretches back generations. Pistahan Festival, held annually at Yerba Buena Gardens, is the jewel of the Bay Area's FilAm cultural calendar and draws tens of thousands each year.
