About the Community
Los Angeles has been the center of Filipino-American civic and cultural life on the mainland for over a century. Historic Filipinotown — officially designated by the City of Los Angeles in 2002 — anchors a community whose roots stretch back to the manong generation of Filipino laborers who arrived in California in the 1920s and 1930s. Today, LA's Filipino-American community is one of the most organizationally rich in the country, with dozens of regional associations, cultural arts groups, and professional organizations keeping the community connected across the sprawl of Southern California.
