About the Community
San Diego's Filipino-American community owes much of its size and character to the United States Navy. For decades, Filipino nationals could enlist in the US Navy — a pathway to American citizenship that brought thousands of Filipino sailors and their families to San Diego. These Filipino Navy veterans and their families put down deep roots in neighborhoods like National City and Mira Mesa, building a community anchored in military service, Catholic faith, and the tight-knit bayanihan that characterizes Filipino communities everywhere.
