About the Community
The Filipino story in Hawaii begins in 1906, when the first group of Sakadas — Filipino plantation workers contracted by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association — arrived on Oahu. These workers, predominantly from Ilocos Norte, established the foundation of a Filipino Hawaiian community that has grown over 120 years into the most culturally embedded Filipino population in the United States. Their descendants have shaped Hawaiian politics, culture, food, and civic life across generations, making the Filipino community an inseparable part of what makes Hawaii Hawaii.
Did You Know?
Waipahu on Oahu was built around a sugar plantation where Filipino Sakada workers settled in the early 20th century — the town's history is inseparable from the story of Filipino immigration to Hawaii.
