About the Community
Chicago's Filipino-American community has been shaped in significant part by the nursing and healthcare professions. Beginning in the 1960s and accelerating through the Immigration Act of 1965, thousands of Filipino nurses, doctors, and medical professionals came to Chicago, settling in the north and northwest suburbs and building a community rooted in professional achievement, Catholic faith, and strong bayanihan spirit. Their professional organizations — nursing associations, medical societies, and alumni groups — became the backbone of FilAm civic life in the Midwest.
Did You Know?
Illinois has one of the largest Filipino nurse populations in the United States, a legacy of the post-1965 immigration wave that brought Filipino healthcare professionals to Chicago's hospitals.
