Every August, the Yerba Buena Gardens in the heart of San Francisco transform into a celebration of Filipino culture, food, and community. Pistahan — which means "festival" in Filipino — is the largest annual Filipino cultural festival in the United States, drawing tens of thousands of visitors over a weekend.
Founded in 1993 by the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE), Pistahan has grown into a cornerstone of Filipino-American life on the West Coast. The festival is free and open to the public, making it one of the most accessible Filipino cultural events in the country.
The festival floor is a sensory experience: the sizzle of isaw and barbecue on the grill, the thump of kulintang gongs, the swoosh of tinikling bamboo poles as performers practice their footwork. Food vendors line every walkway, serving everything from kare-kare and lechon to halo-halo and leche flan. Community organizations and barangay booths display their heritage through crafts, cultural artifacts, and regional Philippine costumes.
The main stage is the heart of Pistahan. Cultural dance companies perform folk dances from across the Philippine archipelago — Mindanaoan, Visayan, Ilocano, and Tagalog traditions all represented. OPM bands and Filipino-American musicians perform throughout the weekend, and the festival often features headline Filipino artists flown in specially for the occasion.
Pistahan also hosts the Miss Pistahan pageant, a celebration of Filipina beauty and cultural pride, and a Filipino fashion showcase that blends traditional Filipiniana with modern design. For families, a dedicated children's area offers cultural games, crafts, and activities that introduce younger generations to Philippine traditions.
