Every October, Filipino Americans across the United States celebrate Filipino American History Month (FAHM) β a month dedicated to honoring the history, contributions, and culture of the largest Asian American group in the country. With over four million Filipino Americans calling the US home, this month matters.
Filipino American History Month was established by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) in 1988, and officially recognized by the US Congress in 2009. October was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos on the North American continent: on October 18, 1587, Filipino sailors aboard the Manila-built galleon Nuestra SeΓ±ora de Esperanza landed in Morro Bay, California β more than 400 years before the modern Filipino American community took shape.
The story of Filipino Americans is one of labor, resilience, and transformation. The manong generation β Filipino farmworkers who arrived in California in the early 20th century β helped organize the first farmworkers' strikes alongside CΓ©sar ChΓ‘vez and the United Farm Workers. Filipino nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers have shaped American medicine for generations. Filipino-American musicians, artists, athletes, and politicians have contributed to every corner of American life.
During October, Filipino-American communities host cultural nights, film screenings, academic lectures, art exhibits, and historical exhibitions that bring this story to life. Schools with large Filipino-American student populations often hold cultural awareness weeks. Filipino community organizations host heritage dinners, award ceremonies honoring community leaders, and youth programs connecting younger generations to their roots.
How can you participate? Start by searching our events directory for events in October β filter by "Cultural Celebrations" or search "FAHM" or "Filipino American History Month" in your city. Events happen nationwide but are most concentrated in California (especially the Bay Area and Los Angeles), Hawai'i, Washington state, Illinois, and the New York/New Jersey metro area.
Beyond events, Filipino American History Month is a time for reflection and education. Visit the FANHS website to learn about local chapters, read Filipino-American literature (Carlos Bulosan's America is in the Heart remains essential), and support Filipino-American-owned businesses and cultural organizations in your community.
If your organization is hosting a FAHM event, submit it to our directory at least three weeks in advance. Filipino American History Month events are some of the most searched Filipino events in October β visibility matters. Together, we honor our history by showing up for each other.
